What's a DivX File?

DivX, also also called DivX-MPEG4 or "DVD killer", is new digital compression technology that based on MPEG-4 Part 2 and born for DVD ripping. The video files using DivX compression technology are small but the image quality is good. A common CD can hold 120 minutes of high quality movies close to DVD. Plus, there is low hardware requirements to play Divx videos. Divx can be played smoothly as long as your computer is more than 300MHz and 64M memory.

DivX was originally a hack version of Microsoft MPEG-4 technology. In about 1998, Microsoft developed the first MPEG-4 codecs for Windows, including various versions: Microsoft MPEG4 V1, Microsoft MPEG4 V2, and Microsoft MPEG4 V3. V1 and V2 are used in AVI files The encoding quality of V1 and V2 is not very good. Things changed in Microsoft MPEG4 V3. The picture quality has made remarkable improvements. Unfortunately, MPEG4 V3 is restricted to use in the Windows Media Service. That is the ASF streaming media files we often see. Microsoft MPEG-4 could not be used in AVI container. Although the ASF file has obvious advantages, it cannot be edited easily and thus has not been widely used. Later, some hackers and their group not only cracked Microsoft's MPEG4, removed the limitation for AVI container format, and created a new video encoding technology - DivX3.11, which could be seen everywhere in the era of Divx.

DivX was later widely used for compressing videos and thus became the informal "standard" of DVDRip. Due to the technology of DivX and DVD decryption, the DVD movie can be spread through the Internet, and the quality of DivX video is very close to that of DVD. Most people can not see the difference, but the capacity is only 1/3 or even 1/4 of the DVD. Furthermore, you can also download subtitle files to play with the DivX video using Divx compatible media player. Unfortunately, Divx is used for commercial purpose later, which restricted its development and in that process, resulted in the creation of another video codec technology - Xvid.

Answer: DivX video is usually wrapped in the avi file container when generating MPEG4 compressed data. Since it is not a standard avi file, Windows Media Player cannot play Divx file directly. To play a DivX movie, you must install the DivX codec, which is actually a decoding plugin for Windows Media Player. After the plugin is installed, you can use the Windows Media Player to play DivX movies directly. You can also download a dedicated player to play DivX, such as DivX Player. However, I highly recommend a comprehensive media player like PotPlayer.
